Rising above the utility wires of the booming tourist and retirement communities at its base, Grandfather Mountain is still majestic. I can remember when the area was so very rural with no vacation homes breaking up the ridge lines and competing for views. The lush and less disturbed country around it had been inhabited by mountain citizens for a couple of centuries but it was very scenic. Now the almost urban surroundings leave a blight that cannot be undone. As more and more retirees compete for scenery the scenery is being destroyed. My husband and I just returned from a very short but peaceful mountain trip to northwest North Carolina. We were based near Boone.
